Fibromyalgia (new lat., fibro-, fibrous tissue, Gk. myo-, muscle, Gk. algos-, pain), meaning muscle and connective tissue pain (also referred to as FM or FMS), is a medically unexplained syndrome[1][2][3] characterized by chronic widespread pain and a heightened and painful response to pressure (allodynia).[4] Other core symptoms are debilitating fatigue, sleep disturbance, and joint stiffness. Some patients[5] may also report difficulty with swallowing,[6] bowel and bladder abnormalities,[7] numbness and tingling (paresthesia),[8] and cognitive dysfunction.[9] Many patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia also have psychiatric disorders.[10] Because fibromyalgia involves more than just pain, the term “fibromyalgia syndrome” is often used; not all affected persons experience all associated symptoms.[11]
There is no recognized cure for fibromyalgia, but some treatments have been demonstrated by controlled clinical trials to be effective in reducing symptoms, including psychological or behavioral therapies,[2][12][13][14] medications, patient education, and exercise.[15]
Fibromyalgia is a controversial diagnosis. Many members of the medical community consider fibromyalgia a ‘non-disease’ because of a lack of abnormalities on physical examination, the absence of objective diagnostic tests,[16][17] and extensive overlap with other proposed conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity.[2][18] Although several brain imaging studies have shown evidence for possible neurological differences in fibromyalgia and healthy controls, these studies may show only correlation, not causation,[16] and fibromyalgia might be the result of childhood stress or prolonged or severe stress rather than a primary disorder of the brain.[19]
”Fibromyalgia patients have been seeking chiropractic care increasingly often. Because fibromyalgia causes numerous tender points all over the body, many fibromyalgia patients suffer from back pain, neck pain, and leg cramps. In an attempt to solve these problems, many sufferers have looked to chiropractors. Because simple adjustments to the neck and spine can restore the carriage of the whole body, a lot of fibromyalgia sufferers find that alignments of the spine can significantly reduce pain all over their bodies.”
